UNITED STRUGGLE TO COMPETE

Manchester United manager David Moyes suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of arch rivals Manchester city during the weekend. It was one of the worst performances from Manchester United in a long time and it is one that increases the pressure on Moyes.

The former Everton manager was already coming into the match on the back of a poor run of form, which had seen them drop points against big teams like Chelsea and Liverpool. Moyes also has the unwanted record of not having won against a top team, although he did have a good record against city while he was at Everton.

However, it did not come to his help at the Etihad stadium on Sunday after his United team were annihilated by city, who looked extraordinary in all areas of the pitch. Two goals from Sergio Aguero, a crucial goal from Yaya Touré just before the half-time, and a goal from Samir Nasri helped city not only take three points, but also bragging rights within the city for the next six months. As a result of this defeat, United have taken just seven points from their opening five matches, which is the worst start that they have made since the 04-05 season, and have seen their odds on who will be relegated from the Premier League shorten to just 100-1!

Moyes was unable to explain the reason for the poor performances of his players.

“I don’t know, I think it’s just what I’d have done if I’d – I’ve been here [the Etihad] many times with Everton and don’t think I’ve suffered a defeat like this with Everton in my time. So I just told the players the way I would have told players at any other club if I don’t think they’re doing it. They’re good players, they’re good pros, they know when they’re bang at it and when they’re not,” said Moyes after the match.
